He Is Worthy

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

Revelation 5:12

If mankind is only the result of eons of evolutionary processes, then there is truly no meaning to life or to history. With such a fatalistic world view, it’s no wonder there is rampant personal depression and widespread societal discord. But if we see beauty in creation and find significance in living, then our thoughts are moved towards belief in a Creator. Then we begin to wonder, what is God like? And does He have a plan for history, or for me?

The discovery of a merciful, benevolent Creator begins with an acknowledgement in faith; for “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 That is just the beginning, but the revelation doesn’t end there. God’s plan of redemption for mankind spans the ages. Marked by the atoning sacrifice of His dear son Jesus, who conquered sin and rose victoriously over death, the resurrection is the guarantee of eternal life to those who believe.

Many look to the book of Revelation as a pattern for the last days on earth. It’s also a history of what takes place in heaven. The fifth chapter begins, “Then I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals.” Whether physically or figuratively, the intended meaning is that in God’s hands is a scroll describing future events. But the scroll is sealed! And a concealed, meaningful future is far more distressing than the presumed empty, meaningless future of the godless! Seeing John weeping, one of the elders of heaven came to John and said, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” When Jesus took in his hands the scroll of human history, all the angels in heaven sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals,…” and “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

Jesus is the master of history. History is the revelation of Jesus. Jesus is worthy of all praise and worship forever!
